I know I just talked about Liverpool yesterday, but now I’m not done.
Steven Gerrard has been quoted (recently) as saying that Xabi Alonso is the “difference in us from last year.” {If you are not aware Xabi Alonso is an excellent midfielder who jumped ship and went to to [you guessed it] Real Madrid.}
So, anyways, they don’t have Alonso in the midfield in Anfield anymore and I guess this is bothersome to the Captain of the entire club. However, these comments really don’t sit well with me…
If you’re so devastated by his departure you should have tried to convince him to stay. (Top Flight players ROUTINELY get guys to stay put or recruit them a new team. I’ll bet you this…it wasn’t just the money that took Alonso to Madrid. They recruit better too.
Ok, let’s say he tried that and it didn’t work. Alonso’s mind was made up and there was nothing anybody could do about it (which Gerrard claims and I don’t believe, but that’s neither here nor there), then Gerrard needed to have a team meeting at some point to make clear to the club that they were losing a great player, but that does not mean they are dead in the water. Not by any stretch. He could have gone so far as to say “We don’t need him” to get the boys pumped up.
Well, in my little “fantasy soccer world” that’s what would have happened. Instead, he basically whined and said the reason they suck right now s that they are missing this one guy. That, to me, in unacceptable. If you’re so broken-up that he left maybe you need to re-evaluate your captainship.
So, now I see the real issue in Liverpool…leadership. But not Rafa’s leadership…Captain Gerrard’s.
