The PLTO Commish Critiques: Alternative Healing Methods

by BrianHall on November 22, 2009

By now you’ve probably heard about the strange treatment Robin van Persie is undergoing this week as he recovers from a painful ankle ligament tear that will likely keep him sidelined for the rest of the calender year.

That is unless his strange approach to the injury works.  Van Persie is seeking a unique form of treatment on that injury and has hired a doctor that specializes in alternative methods of healing.  Here is what the Dutch star had to say regarding the unique practice:

I will fly to the Balkans to meet with a female doctor who helped [PSV Eindhoven midfielder] Danko Lazovic. She is vague about her methods but I know she massages you using fluid from a placenta. I am going to try. It cannot hurt and, if it helps, it helps. I have been in contact with Arsenal physiotherapists and they have let me do it.

Placenta massages are not the most common approach to such an injury, but as van Persie mentioned one player has already undergone the process and recovered nearly four weeks earlier from their injury.  So from van Persie’s perspective it’s a win-win situation.

I do not know much about placenta massages, healing gems, or apricot pit therapy.  The best bet usually is the doctor’s orders, but in sports CONFIDENCE is a huge part of the genetic makeup of each player.  So if van Persie wants to soak his body in Ragu sauce every night because it makes him feel lighter on the pitch then let him do it.

The mind is the most precious part of the body and if hiring a doctor to rub placenta ooze all over your ankle makes it feel better then go right ahead.  The PLTO Commish doesn’t know if any of these things will actually help you in the long run, but as long as you think they do then that is all that really matters anyway.

But the very best healing method for such an injury usually is one of the most underrated practices of all:  Rest.

Or Ragu sauce.
