Wayne Rooney is heating up.  In fact Wayne Rooney is on fire.

With many of the elite Premier League strikers out over the last month (including Drogba, Torres, Adebayor, & Van Persie) there is not much doubt that Wayne Rooney has pulled away from the rest of the pack as the best player in the league so far this year.  After playing second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo for several years, the Englishman has finally been granted the center stage from Fergie and the dangerous game of letting their superstar player walk away has worked out just fine this season for Man U.  Rooney has taken the opportunity to become the main man and he has shined under the spotlight scoring 20 goals and crushing any past career milestones in the process.  And the good news is it is only the beginning of February.

In his last five matches Rooney has scored seven goals and also has two assists.  Now he did benefit from a ridiculous match against Hull City in which he scored four goals, but the striker did also have to play a fairly tough defensive schedule besides that match.  They played the derby against Manchester City and they also played Arsenal and an underrated Burnley defense.  Rooney on average has been reliable for a goal a game this year and is making a thirty goal season seem like it could be a real possibility.  If he were able to pull off such a feat then his name would have to be considered as one of the best players in the world.

Some are even putting him at the top of the list right now, but I think it is only fair to wait until the end of the season.

Or in this year’s case the end of the summer.
