1) Chelsea
I have said before that Chelsea wouldn’t be in their current first place position without the brilliant offense that they do possess. Well it never hurts to have the number one rated defense either. And so far this year Chelsea has averaged giving up less then a goal per game. As of right now the club has conceded 16 goals this season in 20 matches. Almost the exact same total as Didier Drogba’s personal statistics. And who is to thank for this tremendous first half result? Jon Terry of course. Terry is not only the best Premier League defender, but last season he was awarded Champions League Defender of the Year. Chelsea is in first place not only due to a fantastic offense, but also due to a tough, relentless defense as well.
2) Aston Villa
Aston Villa takes their defense of play very seriously. In fact the current roster is so dedicated to defense that they have twelve defenders on the active roster. And why not? Villa has only conceded two more goals then Chelsea this season and deserve the honor of being considered for the best defensive award. Friedel in goal has proven to be an ageless wonder. If Villa can keep up the defensive wall they have established so far this year then the sky is the limit.
3) Birmingham
Birmingham is the black sheep or the dark horse of all the potential award winners, but with their first half play they just might have a chance at taking home some hardware at the end of the season. Joe Hart has been brilliant in goal and Birmingham is only one of four clubs that haven’t given up a goal per game on average. Nobody knew the newboys would be this good.
