Is Drogba the MVP Pack Leader?

by BrianHall on November 17, 2009

Didier Drogba has had a ridiculous start to the year.  Not only has his squad, Chelsea, met their high preseason expectations and remained the top squad despite some tough challenges, but the forward has done a great job shaking off the rust from last year’s injury plagued season and has performed up to the peak of his abilities.  Drogba is not alone in the club’s success, but the forward is on pace to win just about every coveted award by season’s end.

I know it is still very early into the season and three quarters of action still remain, but Drogba’s opening numbers to the year are jaw dropping to say the least.  Drogba is currently in second place in total goals behind Liverpool‘s Fernando Torres, but unlike the Spanish striker Drogba has scored a single goal in nearly every match this season rather then scoring many goals in a few real big matches.

In fact last week against Manchester United was one of only two matches all season that Drogba has not scored a goal or set up an assist.  But in twelve matches the Ivory Coast star has scored nine goals with five assists and has been shutout from scoring a goal in only four of those matches.  Two out of those four matches Drogba set-up a goal and in three out of four tournament matches Drogba has scored as well.

In short Drogba is averaging over a goal-a-game whether it is by goal or assist.  His squad has a match lead over the rest of the league table and the key forward has proven to be the most consistent player at the start of the 2009 season.

Now will he continue the impressive pace after his cracked rib setback or did I just give the injury-prone star the Sports Illustrated jinx for the rest of the season?
