Anxiety is mounting among Chelsea fans as to whether the club will offer their icon Didier Drogba a new deal that would keep him at the bridge longer. Drogba’s contract is set to run out this summer and according to coach Andres Villas-Boas he is hopeful that Drogba will sign a new contract with the club.
Drogba has been instrumental to Chelsea’s past successes and the thought of him leaving the club is inconceivable among fans. Though the Ivorian international is no spring chicken, his experience and leadership qualities have endeared him to the hearts of many.
Speaking to reporters on the matter, AVB was quoted as saying that the club still has an interest in securing Drogba’s services.
“We’ve had these talks before,” AVB said.
“January arrives and the player is free to start speaking to other people and he has this advantage but his integrity and his values are never in question, neither his professionalism.
“We have to reach an agreement. It’s a two-way process and it’s been on-going for quite some time.
Though Drogba is free to talk to other clubs, it is very unlikely that a move to China will materialise. According to the striker’s agent, he will be looking for the ‘best’ deal to give Drogba.
Thierno Seydi has already turned down a one year extension offered to Drogba by the club instead saying that the 33 year old will go where he is offered the most money.
“We could have reached an agreement earlier but it wasn’t the case and now January arrives for the player to consider his options.
“For me as a manager it’s important to count on the player and person and I’m sure I can have it 100 per cent.”
That said, more will be know on Drogba’s future within the month and towards the end of the year.
