Manchester City‘s Spanish forward David Silva slammed Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque for his biased team selection and claimed that the only reason he never featured regularly for his national team was because he was not a Barcelona or Real Madrid player.
City are indeed having a good season so far and many people are starting to take their title ambitions very seriously. Their recent 4-0 thrashing of Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park yesterday is a strong statement as to their title hopes.
However, one has to notice, Silva’s less and less participation this season. This is no doubt that the former Valencia player is talented, however, with latest acquisitions, Dzeko, Aguerro and Balotelli, it is becoming very crowded at the front.
Silva was on record early this month when he said that he did not agree with the way the coach had the players on the team.
“I don’t think that your performances at club level have any effect on whether you play for the national side. I have played at a very high level for my club for a long time, but it’s not been enough to earn a starting berth.”
“I feel lucky to be part of this great squad, but I also get the feeling that the coach doesn’t really need me. When we lost against Switzerland at the World Cup, I was the only one who felt the consequences and that’s not been the only time that I was the victim.”
Now, could David Silva be over reacting just a bit? He probably could. You have to remember that Del Bosque was the highly successful coach of Real Madrid during their Galacticos era and his success record speaks for itself.
Commenting on the matter, Del Bosque played down the issue saying that it was a non-issue.
“This [Silva's comments] is a consequence of the last World Cup. Some players could have had the same complaint and have said nothing. We know that the entourage of some players can cause harm instead of benefiting them.”
On his part Silva claimed that had he joined any of the two big clubs Real Madrid or Barcelona, his situation could have been different.
“Whether my situation would have been different if I played for Barcelona or Real Madrid,”
“To be honest, I sometimes get the feeling that I would be treated differently if I had joined one of those two teams.”
