Chelsea Surrendering Another Title

by Dewa Nugraha on February 19, 2011

La scritta e il luogo fuori dallo stadioAfter literally surrendering their premier league crown and only concentrated in getting into the Champions League zone for the season, Chelsea, are forced to give up another trophy as they were defeated in the FA Cup replay game against Everton.

After drawing the initial game 1-1 at Goodison park, the Blues failed to take the home advantage and continue their current lack of sharpness up front as the 90 minutes game ended in a goalless draw.

Despite dominating the game for the most of part, Chelsea just can’t seem to find the sharpness and confident in front of the goal after failing to score any goals in their last two league matches. Chances from Frank Lampard and Branislav Ivanovic are nothing more than a small sparks that provide some cheers from the fans but not enough to change the scoreline in the full 90 minutes.

However, the Blues fans did think that their team could just steal the match on extra time after Frank Lampard volley struck the back on Tim Howards’ net and give Chelsea a slender lead until Leighton Baines broke the home side’s heart right at the dead. The Everton left back scored a wonderful free kick just a minute before the final extra time minutes ended, resulting the match to be ended in a penalty shoot out which brings misery for the host.

Two misses by Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole were just too much to keep up as Peter Cech only managed to save on shot from Baines, resulting in the Blues surrendering another title that they won last season. This defeat will give more question mark for Carlo Anceloti’s future as it seems that the former Ac Milan’s coach future is decided on Chelsea’s progress in the Champions League this season, which coincidently is starting this midweek.

Having already giving up chasing the premier league title, crashing out from the FA Cup can surely be considered a loss for the Blues and with the Champions League matches are up and running it looked like the European competition will be Ancelotti’s last bet this season. It’s interesting to see whether their mentality is strong enough to handle the recent up and down results their having in local competition, as despite only facing FC Kopenhagen, anything can still happen in the Champions League.
