Chelsea have offered striker Salomon Kalou a new deal to replace his current contract that ends next summer. The 26 year old striker has in the recent past become surplus to the squad after the arrival of Mata, Toress and Lukakhu.
Of course, there are very many different views as to whether Kalou deserves to be a Blues player, however, the truth of the matter is that his talent cannot be doubted.
Before signing for Chelsea, Kalou played for Dutch side Feyenoord. His lethal strike partnership with Dirk Kuyt gave him the opportunity to fight for the honour of being considered the Eredivisie top scorer in a number of seasons.
His exploits however, cauhgt the eye of Chelsea and Kalou joined the Blues in 2006 for a reported £8 million. Kalou has since scored 55 goals in 232 games for Chelsea 35 of which have been in the league.
However, the irony is that of all 146 Premier League appearances, 57 of them have as a substitute. Despite coach Villas-Boas expressing his delight at Kalou’s loyalty to the club, things have not changed much either as Kalou things have not really changed since the Portuguese took over from Carlo Ancelotti in the summer.
A statement from the club read:
“Kalou was offered a contract and hopefully we will continue talks,”
“In January these players are available to discuss their future. We’ll continue talks until we reach an agreement or not.
“The fact that they are emotionally tied to this club – like Nico (Anelka) – too, means we can count on them while they are negotiating. Their loyalty to the club will never be in question.”
Under the present circumstances nothing has been officially been disclosed, however, a key question that arises is whether Kalou will be content to contiune warming the bench seeing that he has fallen further down the pecking order since the arrival of new players this year.
I highly doubt it, however, the striker won’t be too quick to ask for a move until a better offer from a reasonable team comes his way.
