Chelsea Eying Roma’s De Rossi As Essien’s Replacement?

by Dewa Nugraha on July 11, 2011

Chelsea flag in the crowd at Stamford BridgeLosing Michael Essien for a possible six months because of a serious injury simply has simply worried Chelsea‘s manager, Andre Villas-Boas, considering the Ghanian has always been an important player for the Blues’ midfield.

In order to keep the team strong for next summer, reports emerged that the former FC Porto tactician is keen on acquiring As Roma’s star midfield player, Daniele De Rossi, who is being considered as the perfect replacement for Essien.

Although being Roma’s second captain after Francesco Totti, De Rossi’s possibility of leaving the capital next summer is still possible as the player hasn’t agree on extending his current contract that will end in 2012. This condition simply opens’ up Chelsea’s chance in getting the player, who can play as a defensive midfielder or box to box player with an ease, the characteristic that’s very similar to Essien. The quality of the Italian is also undoubted, as should the Blues managed to acquire him they might not be missing the Ghanaian at all.

However, there would still be a difficulty for Chelsea in getting De Rossi as the player is known to be very attached with the capital club since he is being raised from the Roma’s youth ranks and have been considered as Totti’s heir. This situation is the thing that in the end could make the Italian international finally changed his current persistence and finally agreeing a contract extension being offered by the Giallorossi’s new management.

It would definitely take a big effort from Chelsea if they are really serious in acquiring the Giallorossi’s star as the Blues must managed to convince the Italian international that leaving the Capital would benefit his career. Roma themselves are currently undergoing a major change with the arrival of new owners, director and also coach, something that might just effected De Rossi’s decision in whether to accept an extension or considering the Blues’ offer.
