Chelsea Breaks The Bank For A Risky Business?

by Dewa Nugraha on February 1, 2011

La scritta e il luogo fuori dallo stadioGetting into final day in the transfer market, Premier League clubs made some surprising record breaking deal that no one would actually expect could happen this season.

Among the teams that reinforced heavily this January, Chelsea are practically the one that made the headline with the sensational swoop they made for Fernando Torres and David Luiz.

More than 75 million Euro was being cashed out by the Blues’ owner, Roman Abramovic, despite previous reports about having a loss that they’ve been having so far. Surely the signings especially Torres’ purchasing that cost the London club around 58,5 million Euro, making it a record breaking deal for transfers made between British clubs. Meanwhile, Luiz’ himself come for a fee around 25 million Euro and the addition Chelsea’s young player, Nemanja Matic, that went to Benfica as part of the agreement.

Those two signings are pretty much lighten up the market situation in the premier league especially for the Chelsea fans as they probably didn’t expect that Abramovic would be making another sensational swoop in the market especially this January. The arrival of Torres and Luiz, pretty much showed that the Russian owner still believes that the Blues can compete in winning some of the competitions that they’re still competing especially the premier league and Champions League.

With the addition of Torres, Carlo Ancelotti would have an extra addition in their attacking department which before their last two league games seemed to have goal scoring issues that lead to their long run of bad results not so long ago. Meanwhile, Luiz is surely being set as the extra reinforcement that their defensive department really needs especially since they didn’t really go into the market last summer despite losing an important player at the back such as Ricaldo Carvalho.

Although the arrival of Torres and Luiz could be very important to improve the Blues’ quality, still is the amount of money that the London club spend for the two players in such a short notice kinda shocked many football fans as it happened so sudden. Moreover, reports also claimed that this mega deal was being made simply because with the financial fair play rules is around the corner, there won’t be any chance for Abramovic to splash around crazy money easily in the next future.

Another minus point from the transfer would be whether those large sum that Chelsea have cashed out to purchase those two players especially Torres is really worth it. Not denying the quality of the Spaniard, but the striker hasn’t really been performing consistently well in the last two season because of the injury issues that he keeps on having. Should the player still carries his problems to Stamford Bridge, that large cash that they have already splashed would just go down the drain. In short it’s a good deal indeed for both parties, but still is a risky one considering the amount of money being involved in.
