Carlo Ancelotti Comes To The Defense Of Villas-Boas

by Philip Mboya on December 2, 2011

Former Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti has come to the defense of  his successor Andres Villas-Boas. Ancelotti who believes Villas-Boas needs to be given more time, identified Chelsea’s current run of poor form is due to the oldness of the players.

The truth of the matter is that though most players might be past their prime, Chelsea were a bit too ambitious when they signed the 34 year old Porto FC coach.

Prior to being named Chelsea coach, Andre Villas-Boas had only two seasons of managerial experience one with Porto and Academica de Coimbra. And yet they expect to compete with the likes of  United, City and other big Euroopean nations.

“Villas-Boas cannot work miracles,” Ancelotti said. “This is an old team now.”

“It is exactly the same team as the one I left, with the exception of Juan Mata and Raul Meireles. The problem is not Villas-Boas, it is with the team that he has.

“Andre is young and inexperienced, but he has done well and he is talented. I feel Roman (Abramovich) needs to give him time to sort it out and make his ideas work.”

Ancelotti does however raise a good point saying that Chelsea knew about his lack of experience and still went ahead to sign so in actually sense, they have to give him time to adjust and produce a winning formula.

The only sad thing, is that Chelsea do not have the time. Currently 5th on the English Premier Table and with a tough away fixture to Newcastle tomorrow, i cannot imagine what would happen if Chelsea lose the match.

It would probably force Villas-Boas to quit. With a number of key players linked with moves away from Chelsea, Villas-Boas has his work cut out for him. Villas-Boas believes that the situation is only made worse by constant focus on the negatives.

“I cannot repeat myself one time and then another time about the situation, we can only grab ourselves to our hard work and continue to believe that we are going to invert the situation.”
