Can they repeat their 2009 glory?
The first trophy to be contested this season is the Carling Cup and it goes down today at Wembley. This is what I LOVE about European sports. There are so many ways to be successful during the season that it gets interesting for everybody. Aston Villa and United will square off to take the Carling Cup and that means that Aston Villa can redeem part of their larger FA Cup season with a Carling Cup win.
Personally, I think Aston Villa has a good chance to defeat United. United has larger ambitions and they are probably reeling with excitement from learning that Arsenal might fall back after Aaron Ramsey’s injury against Stoke. You can’t blame them for thinking they can just hang at the top of the table with Chelsea.
Now they have to play Aston Villa who has only surrendered 21 goals all season. Is that even possible? That’s freaky actually. Their defense is so very stingy that United might have a hard time breaking through…
…until you learn that United has scored 27 goals in their last 10 games. Yikes!
With Wayne Rooney hitting his stride and Aston Villa having a really strong defense you can bet that the ball will sit at midfield for much of the match. I can’t imagine that Aston Villa is just going to open the floodgates and let Wayne Rooney run rampant all day.
However, they could easily let him do his thing and shut down everyone else. Fortunately, that will work in a soccer match because one guy CANNOT do everything. If they can contain the rest of United frontline then Rooney may never see a shot the entire match.
Because of the harsh contest on Aston Villa’s end they may not have a real shot on goal all match. Plus, United may trip on a cheap goal when Rooney isn’t even in the picture.
I say: United – 1 Aston Villa – 0
