Bottom of the Premier League with just nine points from 15 games and things don’t get any better for Owen Coyle.
Gary Cahill is expected to leave for greater things this January with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham rumoured to be after the England international’s services. And as Cahill loosk to be leaving Coyle is left with a big hole to fill in his defence and his squad.
New York Red Bulls’ defender Tim Ream has been on trial with Bolton and training with the Greater Manchester side. He also recently had a spell on trial at West Bromwich Albion. But Red Bulls’ Sporting Director Erik Soler has other ideas. He says that Ream is going nowhere in January and that he will be playing for the Red Bulls next season.
So the idea of these being trials would in Soler’s eyes be incorrect. He just sees them as an opportunity for Ream to train with these clubs and was quoted as referring to them as in the mid or lower Premier League. That may be true Erik but it’s not polite for you to say it.
So we presume that Ream’s agent might not have told the Red Bulls, but between him and the New York defender they must have other ideas for him to be touting himself to EPL clubs.
We’ll watch all of this with interest. Soler says Ream is coming back and that he spoke to the player and agreed that and Coyle needs someone quick. And he won’t hang around waiting for Ream to agree things with the Red Bulls so it looks like this deal is done. Although as we know, much stranger things have happened in football.
Coyle’s biggest worry though might be whether this is actually going to be his decision to make. Phil Gartside is known as one of the more loyal Chairman in the Premiership, but there comes a time when every owner reaches their limit. If the Bolton Manager fails to pick up anything from the next three league games which culminate in a Boxing Day game at home to Newcastle, he could very wll be sat at home in January and not in an office in the Reebok Stadium.
