It looks like Birmingham City have a very odd way in terms of deciding their transfer target especially when it involves big name players as after canceling the deal for Mauro Camoranesi in the last minute last summer, the club done the same thing again with Robbie Keane.
Just Like Camoranesi’s case, Birmingham also decided to cancel their offer for Keane just after the club already agreed in paying the transfer fee required by Spurs to acquire the Irish striker.
According to the club’s chairman, Peter Pannu, the reason for canceling the transfer is because of financial reasons as after holding a meeting with the manager, Alex McLeish, and team’s scout, Paul Montgomerry, they decided purchasing Keane wasn’t the right option. Pannu revealed that although they acknowledge the former Inter Milan player’s quality, but apparently signing him won’t be something that financially benefit Birmingham in the long term.
“I met with Alex and Paul today to discuss some new targets – names that we will not be mentioning at this moment in time – as we have decided that the signing of Keane would not be in the best financial interests of the club,” Pannu said to Birmingham’s official site. Everyone knows he is a tremendous player but having considered the overall package (one which certainly wasn’t unfair on the part of his representatives to ask for given his talent and experience), Keane’s age and the length of contract we felt that financially he wasn’t the best option available.”
Despite pulling the plug on the Keane’s deal, Pannu give assurance to the fans that the club will try to look elsewhere for reinforcement as the club are looking for a player that won’t give them financial headache in the future. Unfortunately, the chairman isn’t giving any new names that could be on the run as the alternative for canceling on the the Spurs’s striker bid that probably already give some spirited smile for some of the fans back when the deal is close to happen.
This is unfortunate because Keane is a class act but supporters can rest assured we are considering other options and will pursue them where financially viable,” Pannu added.
