Bellamy, You Must Be Joking

by BrianHall on November 2, 2009

If there is one thing that really grinds the Yank’s gears it is when athletes that commit a stupid act try to defend it weeks later rather then just allowing the situation to pass and admitting their own stupidity.

Manchester City player and Wales team captain Craig Bellamy was recently a guilty party of such a crime.  Maybe you remember about a month back when Bellamy represented any and every sports villain from a 1980′s movie when he rushed over to a fan during the late minutes of the Manchester Derby (the fan had run on the pitch) and apparently slapped the man in the face when he was standing defenseless restrained by the security officials.  Many thought that the F.A. would come down hard on Bellamy, but after weeks there has been no penalty for the brash act.

And I’m not saying their should be.  But what I am saying is that Craig Bellamy is a whiny brat.  That’s right I said it because it is true.  Here is what Bellamy had to say regarding the incident:

I didn’t punch him, didn’t slap him, didn’t backhand him.  I’ve gone over, told him to get off the pitch. I didn’t quite say it like that – but he got the message. He shoved his head towards me – and the FA have seen this; everyone has seen this.  Certain papers tried to make it look like I have just attacked some fan. I’ve shoved his head out of my direction, clear as that. The FA have seen that, that’s why I didn’t get a ban.

Bellamy seems to have a very fascinating version of what happened.  You didn’t slap him?  Then what was it that you did to that fan?  You said something, but you can’t remember or won’t say whatever it was that you said.  It sounds to me like a classic case of a cover-up.

In the end the fan had no right to be on the pitch in the first place and any injustices done to the man were all due to his own stupidity.  But the same goes for Bellamy.  He did not have to walk over thirty yards out of his way to get involved in a situation that was already in control.  He did not have to slap a fan in the face (which he did do).  But in the end Bellamy’s actions are no better then the fans that he attacked.  And I’m sure that guy suffered more penalties for the incident then Bellamy ever will.
