Chelsea lost the chance to consolidate their fourth place position in the league yesterday after they were humbled 2-0 by Everton at Goodison Park. Goals from Steven Pienaar and Denis Stracqualursi condemned Villas-Boas to his 6 loss of the season and saw Arsenal overtake them into 4th place after a 2-1 away over Sunderland.
So it was a good return to Everton for Pienaar and another bad day at the office for AVB. Despite the jeers and boos from the Chelsea fans, Villas-Boas once again took responsibility for the loss further increasing speculation about his long term future.
Here is what he had to say about the result.
“It’s part of the job. At the moment we’re sitting fifth in the league and it’s not enough for us. I think it was our worst game of the season in every sense of the word. It’s nothing to do with the Manchester United game. Everton were fantastic. The recent signings have helped them improve a lot. We were short of anything positive. It’s a very difficult day for us.”
As things stand now, the Blues are 15 points behind leaders Manchester United however, the table could change after today’s round of fixtures. And with 13 games left to be played, Chelsea stand a chance of failing to qualify for the Champions League next season.
With a knockout first leg match against Napoli on the cards in two weeks time, Villas-Boas knows that an exit from this competition will surely be the last nail in his coffin.
However, what’s shocking is that AVB is still keeping faith with misfiring striker Fernando Torres. The 27 year old Spaniard has now failed to score in his last 14 Premier League outings and its definitely time some hard decisions were made though very unlikely.
“He’s trying a lot to get his chances and to shoot at goal, however long it takes, we’ll continue to pursue his confidence and his full form until he eventually finds the back of the net.” Villas-Boas on Torres.
I personally do not see AVB staying longer than this season, however, should he win the Champions League (which is a very very long shot with performances like these), Abramovich could just decide to keep him. I mean, he would want to get the full use of the £28 million he paid to get him from Porto.
What do you think, Is it time AVB was shown the door and should Chelsea wait until after the season has ended?
