Arteta Not Aiming to Be Fabregas’ Replacement

by Dewa Nugraha on October 7, 2011

Mikel ArtetaComing from the same background as Cesc Fabregas, many people at first expect Arsenal‘s summer signing, Mikel Arteta, becomes a direct replacement for the former Gunners’ captain especially since the latter plays in the same role as Fabregas.

However, Arteta, who has actually started off pretty well with Arsene Wenger’s side, insisted that people especially fans won’t compared him with Fabregas as the current Barcelona player already gave much more for the London outfit.

The ex-Everton midfielder also added that he never have any ambition in becoming Fabregas as Arteta stated he only wants to help Arsenal in doing well this season and personally improve his performance level. The 28-years-old also added that he will try to become an important player for the club on his on way and style, not trying to imitate anything that his fellow Spaniard did back when Cesc was still playing at Emirates.

I am not here to replace Cesc and I would be wrong to try that. Cesc was the best player at Arsenal and one of the top three in the entire Premier League. I have no aim to become that. My target is simply to try to reach my highest level as a player and to help the team,” Arteta said. “Cesc was at Arsenal for seven years. I have been here for a few weeks. If I try to be equal to or better than him, I would be confusing myself. We’re different personalities with a different style. I must find my own way to do well for Arsenal.”

Arteta obviously isn’t keen with the high expectation on him becoming a direct replacement for Fabregas, who has been highly praised during his time with the Gunners. The ex-Everton man is trying to avoid certain pressure which could affect his performance on the pitch, that’s why the best way in having a successful first year at Emirates for Arteta would be to just be himself.

However, should by the end of season Arteta can be an important act for Arsenal, the club’s devotees might look up more to him and give him a special place in their heart as a new idol instead just labeling the Spaniard as Fabregas’ replacement. It would be interesting to see how much can the former Everton offers this season, considering many believes that the 28-years-old is starting to decline a bit because the constant injuries his been having in the last couple of seasons.
