The French FA have confirmed that Arsenal right back Bacary Sagna broke his leg in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur and will be out for around three months.
“The France team doctor, Fabrice Bryand, was informed by his Arsenal colleague of an unstable fracture to Bacary Sagna’s right fibula,” a FFF statement said. “The defender will be operated on tomorrow and is expected to be out for around three months.”
Arsenal have also confirmed the break with a statement on their web site:
“The Club can confirm that Bacary Sagna sustained a fracture to the fibula in his right leg during the match against Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon. Further detailed investigations and assessments will take place on Monday, during which time Bacary will see ankle specialists and the Arsenal medical team regarding the further management of his injury. It is expected that Bacary will be out for approximately three months and a surgical procedure cannot be ruled out at this stage.”
The Arsenal boss blamed Tottenham’s Benoit Assou-Ekotto for the injury saying:
“I think he was pushed quite hard by Assou-Ekotto and I’m not sure what happened to him. ”He might have landed the wrong way, I don’t know. I will have to see it again. Straight away he wanted to be substituted.”
Huge loss for the Gunners who do not have an experienced back-up to replace Sagna and will probably have to rely on Carl Jenkinson to cover for Sagna until the January transfer window opens.
