Arsenal Held by 10 Men Wolves at Emirates

by Dewa Nugraha on December 27, 2011

Arsenal 1 - 0 EvertonArsenal‘s ambition to improve position in the league was halted again as the Gunners only picked up one point from their home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday.

A quick goal by Gervinho didn’t resulted in a goal flowing result for the home team as their visitor managed to pick up an equalizer through Steven Fletcher, and hold it until the final whistle.

Playing in front of their home crowd, Arsene Wenger’s boys started their Boxing day match in a convincing fashion when their summer signing, Gervinho sprung the offside trap before tricking the goalkeeper and easily slotted the ball on Wolves‘ net. The early gave the impression that things would go really easy for Arsenal considering they were totally dominating the match and looking really comfortable in controlling possession along with creating goal scoring chances.

However, a rather too relaxing manner from the Gunners’ players, midway in the first half gave the visitor a chance to get into the game as they started creating chances through the counter attack. The moment that Arsenal fans’ worried about finally arrived few minutes before the break, when Fletcher managed to get his head into Stephen Hunt’s pass and steered the ball passed the London club’s goalie, Wojciech Szczęsny.

The 1-1 scoreline surprised the home team players, who were really pushing on the attack especially right after the re-start as Robin Van Persie begins to look much more dangerous compared to his first half showing. However, Wolves’ keeper, Wayne Hennessey, was simply on his top form on the match as the 24-years-old keeper kept his team on the match with some excellent goal keeping, saving shots from Van Persie, Thomas Vermalen and other Gunners’ players.

Despite playing with 10 men after the dismissal of Nenad Milijas, Wolves’ managed to hold firm even until the six minutes extra time, frustrating the home team , who really looked disappointed with the result. This draw didn’t chance Arsenal’s position in the league table as they are still sitting pretty at fifth place, a point behind fourth spot, Chelsea, who also picked up a draw in their latest league match, last Monday.
