Anelka Gets Chelsea Contract Extension

by David on June 25, 2010

CHELSEA (2) v spurs (0)Chelsea have announced that striker Nicolas Anelka has signed a one-year contract extension to keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2012.

“When I first came to Chelsea I wanted to stay much longer than I did in the past with other clubs,” Anelka said on the Chelsea website. “There is no need to move anymore so I am very glad to sign a new contract.”

I am sure this deal was done before the World Cup, which means that Chelsea controlled the timing of when these story was released to the press. You would think then that with Anelka being sent home in disgrace by France after this week for verbally insulting France coach Raymond Domenech that Chelsea would have waited a little while for Anelka’s bad press to die down a little before announcing this deal.

“Nicolas is a fantastic player who has good technical qualities and movement,” said manager Carlo Ancelotti. “When I was coach at Juventus I wanted to buy him, so it is good now he has signed for me and I think Chelsea is his home. I look forward to working with him for one year more.”

Anelka joined Chelsea from Bolton in 2008 and has scored 42 goals in 123 appearances.
