Alex To Arsenal?

by Philip Mboya on December 11, 2011

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has ruled out signing Chelsea‘s Brazilian defender Alex despite recent rumours that the club was in the market looking for a defender.

Alex who is set to leave Chelsea in the winter transfer window has struggled for regular play under coach Andres Villa-Boas and even if it were true , a move to Arsenal would probably see him continue to warm the bench and evntually leave due to Wenger’s harsh policy on age.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wenger revealed that the club would not be in the market for any defenders.

“We will not be on the market for any centre-back, I can assure you,” he said.

With injuries to Sagna, Gibbs, Jenkinson and Santos, it is hard to see how Arsenal can maintain their current form and consistently fight for a top four finish with the likes of Tottenham.

Even new signing Per Mertersacker believes that the club do need a centre back if they are to remain competitive.

“We need more full-backs I think! It’s not good for the squad if so many full-backs are injured, but what can I say?

“We are looking forward to climbing the league more and more. We have had a lot of pressure to get to fifth in the last month but we need more consistency, in December more than ever.

“Therefore I hope we can pick up a lot of points to get to the top four. We want more than that, of course.”

Arsenal were 1-0 winners over Everton last night thanks to a wonder strike from their top man Robin Van Persie. The Dutchman is currently the top scorer in the league with 15 goals 4 more than 2nd placed Wayne Rooney of Manchester United .

That said, Arsenal have to be commended for their resilience. Two months ago, they were in the relegation zone and now they are contesting for a top 4 finish. Should they continue in the same fashion and the could very challenge for the title that is if the top three pick up negative results from their up coming matches.
