Team Overview: West Brom was one of the inaugural members of the original Football League in 1988, and even though they obviously did not have a great deal of success in 2009 and have been relegated, fans of the club can still take solace in the fact this season marks the 40th anniversary of the last time the Baggies won the FA Cup.
Best Performers: Midfielder Chris Brunt had 8 goals and led the squad (not too impressive). Roman Bednar had 6 goals too, but it wasn’t enough for West Brom. Goalkeeper Scott Carson simply ceded too many goals (1.82 GAA) this season for the Baggies to stay afloat in the English Premier League.
Highest High: West Brom may have been disappointing this season, but at least the fans who showed up for home games were pleased. They went 7-3-9 at home; however, they were a pitiful 1-5-13 on the road. Their two best performances of the entire season came at home with 3-0 wins over Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
Lowest Low: In February 2009, West Brom did not score a single point. This ugly feat made them one of the only teams to go an entire month in the EPL without at least a tie (in the history of the EPL). They also were the worst defensive team in the league, ceding more goals (67) than any other side, and there were some bad defenses in 2009.
Future Outlook: West Brom obviously must improve in order to make a promotion run next season. To play in the most competitive division of English soccer, they must improve their defense. If their recent history continues to repeat itself, West Brom will be back in the EPL in 2011 or 2012 after a good promotion campaign.
